I found Éowyn’s two littlest babies had dead :(. One was kicked out of the nest; the other buried beneath. These little ones were probably what most breeders call “peanuts”. They never end up living, because they’re just not able to grow. The baby remaining is doing well so far. She is definitely a normal sized kit. I brought her and Éowyn into my room. When I put the little one into Éowyn’s bucket, she started to scratch that area and almost trample her baby. I decided to separate them. Right now the baby is in a box full of soft hay, a bit of Éowyn’s fur, cotton balls, and some of Smudge’s fur (that I saved from her “ghost litter”). The box, sitting on my chair, is surrounded with fleece blankets and pillows, so hopefully he’ll keep toasty warm. I will have Éowyn nurse her a few times a day. So far I plan on keeping mama and baby in the house for 10 more days or until baby is able to survive on her own. Wow! This will be quite an experience for me! Sort of hand-raising a single kit whose siblings have died.
This has been a difficult start to breeding this year. Annie’s one baby died. Éowyn having two peanuts and one normal kit. My bunnies not getting pregnant. Kind of frustrating! I will keep trying though.
I am praying that Éowyn’s baby will make it past this stage of life and grow into a healthy adult rabbit!
