The friends who have Peregrin, told me that she might be pregnant! Her babies will be a mini rex/hotot mix!
More surprises! Éowyn had a one baby yesterday! I was not expecting that at all. Like Buttercup, she was sharing a cage with Chunk. I immediately put Chunk in with Annie. Because of my limited cage space, Annie is now a mother to Chunk and Otter as well as to Blueberry and Puffy (her babies). That cage is getting crowded! Now I have a total of 11 rabbits.

I've been really enjoying this cooler weather and so have the rabbits!
It's hard to believe that summer's about over with and most schools around our area are starting tomorrow (we started two weeks ago)! Today Buttercup had two healthy babies. I sort of lost track of when she was due. Of course I had it marked on my calendar, but I didn't really think she was pregnant. So, I just forgot about it. When I went to check on the rabbits this morning, sure enough there was Buttercup pulling fur off of herself. At that moment she was sharing a cage with Chunk and Éowyn, so I had to get them moved out and add a nesting box and hay to the cage. Buttercup instantly started arranging her nest once she had hay. A few hours later there were babies! Buttercup is definitely my best breeder. A week or so ago, little Puffy escaped from her cage. I thought she was gone forever. A couple hours later, I noticed Liberty over by the rabbitry playfully chasing something. I just knew it was Puffy. I found her full of mud, dog slobber and some burrs. She was pretty scared, but recovered quickly and was back to her normal self soon after. PTL! Liberty was so good not to kill her like she did Svart. I'd have to say that I have learned so many things from raising rabbits. One thing I learned is that many books, websites and rabbit forums say that you should never handle a newborn rabbit or the mother'll abandon it. I've found that to be a myth. I've handled ALL my babies since birth (held them just after they were born) and have NEVER had the mother abandon them. Maybe that happens in the wild, but not to my domesticated rabbits. So, go ahead and hold (very gently) those babies after they're born! I need to sell Chunk and Otter soon. And shortly after, Blueberry and Puffy. Anyone interested or know of somebody? I have been considering closing my rabbit business. I really love doing it, but I have found that I haven't been able to properly care for them. Plus I'm spending money to feed them and not making costs since I haven't sold any babies this year. So, Minnesota Minis may be closing in the near future :(. I just can't keep up with rabbits plus school, activities, and the busyness of life! If I do end up closing, I'll probably keep one or two rabbits as pets (currently I have ten!). I hope everyone had a relaxing Labor Day! Just posting a photo of my latest litter, Blueberry and Puffy (Annie's babies). They are almost 4 weeks old now.
I have been quite busy since the 4th of July, so I haven't had time to update this blog until now.
All of July I was playing 1st violin in the pit orchestra (my first time ever!) for Dassel-Cokato Community Theater in the production of Oliver! It was much fun. Our final performance was yesterday afternoon. We also entered items in the Wright County Fair during the rehearsals and performances of Oliver! The fair ended yesterday as well. I received my first grand champion ribbons for two of my items~ something I've been hoping to get for the past 6 years! I will probably enter those items (a photograph and reversible apron) in the Minnesota State Fair. Five weeks ago I gave Peregrin away to some friends of ours (the same people who own the goats and Molly). Turns out he might be a doe after all! A couple days ago Honey excaped her cage and before I was able to put her back, my cat (Milo) caught her and ended up killing her :(. That's a total of 6 dead babies this year.... I'll be posting Chunk and Otter for sale today. They are already 6 weeks old! Annie had four babies about a week ago~ two of them died. One looks like her and one is a bluish-gray color. Benjamin and Gabriel having fun with the baby bunnies....Happy Independence Day! We are spending the 4th here at home. Tonight we are going to meet our good friends for a fireworks display in Delano, MN! I've heard that it's an awesome show.
A little over a week ago, on June 24, Buttercup had three little ones. Chunk, Otter and Honey. Chunk is double the size of the other two (and they're normal sized for their age)! I just can't believe how big he is for a week old. Honey's eyes are opening today. Chunk and Otter's should open up soon. My little indoor bunny (Éowyn's baby) is a boy, so I'm going to sell him :(. I just don't have cage space for another male. He is the most friendly, social bunny ever! We all really like him a lot. I named him Peregrin (well, at first I thought he was a girl and named him Rosie May. But when I found he wasn't a girl, I changed his name). He'll be weaned and ready for a new home this Saturday :(. |
